3 found dead in Calif. apartment blaze; 3 injured

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? A couple and their granddaughter were killed and three others were injured ? including a police officer credited with saving at least one person ? in a late-night fire at a Northern California apartment complex, authorities said Sunday.

The officer and firefighters called to the complex shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday found people trapped in an apartment on the second floor of the building, San Jose Fire Department Capt. Mary Gutierrez said.

The police officer, who has not been named, entered the burning apartment and pulled at least one person to safety, Gutierrez said.

"He was one of the first on the scene," Gutierrez said. "He had a fire extinguisher, entered the burning apartment and performed at least one rescue. He got somebody out of that burning apartment."

After firefighters put the fire out, the bodies of a man, a woman and a child were recovered, Gutierrez said.

A woman who escaped the fire told the San Jose Mercury News (http://bit.ly/12Rk1Kp ) she lost her parents, Bulmaro and Mariana Maldonado, and 4-year-old daughter Kyra in the blaze.

"I just woke up, and the room was on fire," Cecilia Maldonado said.

The police officer was one of three people taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, Gutierrez said. She did not know the condition of the officer or of the two other people hospitalized. Their names have not been released, and San Jose police did not immediately return a call seeking information about the officer.

The Mercury News reported the injured included a relative in the apartment, 23-year-old Juan Carlos Maldonado, who was sent to the intensive care unit.

The fire destroyed the family's apartment and damaged one below. It left 56 people in the complex homeless, and authorities said they could be allowed back in their apartments after a few days.

They were assisted by the American Red Cross, with about half being put up in hotels, said Red Cross spokeswoman Kathleen Maclay.

Meanwhile, investigators were looking through the rubble of the apartment and interviewing witnesses as they tried to determine what sparked the fire.

PopTrayU

One of the few utilities that I can't imagine living without is an e-mail notifier running in the Windows system tray, and the best I've found is a freeware open-source gem, PopTrayU. My main reason for wanting PopTrayU on my system is the obvious one?I want it to pop up a window that alerts me to new incoming mail. But I also want it for the less obvious, and slightly counter-intuitive reason, that it helps me to concentrate on my other work. With PopTrayU running in the system tray, and set to check new mail at regular intervals, I'm less tempted than I would otherwise be to open my mail client obsessively to see whether anyone has dropped me a line.

PopTrayU stands out from other mail notifiers with its clean, customizable design and complete keyboard support. Other notifiers tend to display either large, cluttered windows or tiny indicators with merely the number of new messages but no details. PopTrayU gives me the option of opening a tiny indicator or exactly what I want in a mail notifier, which is a compact window that lists the sender, subject, and time of each new message. If I click on one of the messages in the list, a preview window displays its contents, or I can right-click on the message and delete it or open my mail client and reply to it.

I like the way PopTrayU can be set up to list only new messages, not the hundreds of messages that I've accumulated in my inbox. I regularly check four or more accounts, and PopTrayU displays each on a separate tab, and lets me temporarily disable checking any account that I don't want distracting me.

Unlike every other mail notifier I've tried, PopTrayU lets me assign hotkeys to all its functions, so that, if I don't want to wait until the app performs its scheduled mail check, I can simply type Ctrl-Alt-C (or any other key-combination that I choose) and wait a few seconds while the app checks my mail. Of course I can also click on its tray icon, but keyboard is far more efficient and less distracting. An enormous range of options lets me specify periods when the app won't check mail, or exactly how many lines of a message to display in the preview window, or exactly how I want the program to notify me. A useful security option lets you password-protect the whole program against prying eyes.

PopTrayU is an update to a popular ten-year-old mail notifier called PopTray, originally written by Renier Crause, and now being updated by Jessica Brown with encouragement from the original author. The new version is currently in open beta, and still has a couple of rough edges that are scheduled to be smoothed out soon. For example, if you want to set up PopTrayU to check an account through the modern IMAP mail protocol, instead of the old-school POP protocol, you'll need to download and install the IMAP plug-in for PopTray from htttp://www.poptray.org/plugins.php. The new developer plans to integrate the app's plug-ins in a forthcoming beta version.

When you click Reply on PopTrayU's menus, the app launches your mail client, which is typically Thunderbird or Outlook. Even when I'm sending mail through web-based services like Gmail or Microsoft's new Outlook.com, I prefer to use a mail client, not the mail service's browser-based interface. But I'd like to see an option in PopTrayU that would let me click a message in its list of messages in my Gmail account and have my browser open Gmail's web interface. Maybe I'll get my wish in a feature version. Meanwhile, for anyone who uses a mail client, as I do, PopTrayU is an indispensable time-saver and distraction-reducer. Even as a work in progress, PopTrayU is better-designed than any of the dozen or more rival mail-checkers I've tried over the years.

UFC 155?s Three Stars: Cain Velasquez, Jim Miller and Erik Perez

UFC 155 saw a new heavyweight champ, a bloody canvas, and a whole lot of Luchador masks. Which fighters stood above the rest?

No. 1 star -- Cain Velasquez: With the way Junior dos Santos handled Cain Velasquez in their first fight, it didn't seem likely that the old champ would be leaving Las Vegas with the belt. The oddsmakers weren't on his side. But a healthy Velasquez used wrestling and powerful striking to handle JDS for five rounds. He gave JDS a whole new look, and showed that his first time winning the belt was no fluke.

Velasquez has plenty of options for his next fight. He could face Alistair Overeem if he gets through Antonio Silva, or the winner of Fabricio Werdum vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. The only fight you shouldn't expect to see is Velasquez vs. Strikeforce champion Daniel Cormier. The teammates at American Kickboxing Academy pledged not to fight each other. Cormier said he would drop down to light heavyweight first.

No. 2 star -- Jim Miller: As the winner, Miller gets the second star, but Joe Lauzon's performance was equally impressive. After much of the pay-per-view was a snoozer, Lauzon and Miller delivered a thrilling, bloody battle. It saved the card, put their fight in contention for bout of the year, and earned them each a $65,000 Fight of the Night bonus.

No. 3 star -- Erik Perez: The UFC sold Perez's Luchador masks before the fight. He was getting a ton of pre-fight hype, due to his first two UFC matches ending in first-round wins. Even with all that pressure, the 23-year-old fighter performed. Perez won with a first-round TKO.

Honorable mention -- Todd Duffee: With Velasquez and dos Santos getting top billing, it was easy to forget that the Duffman was returning to the UFC on the preliminary card. He made his return unforgettable with a quick TKO of Philip de Fries. Duffee took home a $65,000 bonus for his good work.

Honorable mention -- The canvas: With so much blood spilling in the octagon on Saturday night, the canvas was called on like never before. It rose to the occasion, catch every fight droplet. Nicely done, canvas.

Mitch McConnell: Fiscal Cliff Deal Is Close

WASHINGTON -- Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says he and the White House have agreed on preventing tax hikes that the "fiscal cliff" will trigger after midnight. And he says they are very close to an overall deal that would also prevent budget-wide spending cuts.

The Kentucky Republican did not provide any details. But he said on the Senate floor that lawmakers should pass legislation averting tax increases that would otherwise take effect at the start of New Year's Day.

McConnell spoke after President Barack Obama said in televised remarks from the White House that a deal was in sight.

CHICAGO (AP) ? Tribune Co. announced it is emerging after more four years of bankruptcy.

Tribune said late Sunday the reorganized media company begins Monday with new ownership ? the senior creditors ? and a new board of directors: Bruce Karsh, Ken Liang, Peter Murphy, Ross Levinsohn, Craig A. Jacobson, Peter Liguori, and Eddy Hartenstein.

"Tribune will emerge from the bankruptcy process as a multimedia company with a great mix of profitable assets, strong brands in major markets and a much-improved capital structure," said Hartenstein, Tribune's chief executive officer.

Senior creditors Oaktree Capital Management, Angelo, Gordon & Co. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. will control of the new company. The Chicago Tribune reported late Sunday that Liguori, a former TV executive at Discovery and Fox, is expected to be named chief executive the reorganized Tribune Co.

Tribune, which was founded in 1847, publishes some of the best-known newspapers in the U.S., including the Los Angeles Times, The Baltimore Sun and the Chicago Tribune. It also owns WGN in Chicago and 22 other television stations, as well as the WGN radio station. The Tribune's report Sunday said that the new owners expect to sell all of the company's assets.

Tribune Co. sought bankruptcy protection in 2008, less than a year after billionaire developer Sam Zell led an $8 billion leveraged buyout that left the company with $13 billion in debt.

Hillary Clinton Hospitalized!

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been hospitalized for a blood clot that stems from a concussion she suffered a couple of weeks ago. Today Clinton was taken to a New York City hospital where she was admitted for a blood clot, which can be life threatening if not caught in time. I am not saying that is the case of Hillary but just a little fact there. The State Department has revealed that it believes her current condition was caused by a fall she took two weeks ago. The fall was due to the former First Lady being super dehydrated thanks to a bad stomach virus she had at the time. The clot was discovered earlier on Sunday when Clinton went to see her doctors for a follow up visit. She was immediately taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital where she is being treated with anti-coagulants. Hillary will reamin in the hospital for at least 48 hours so that the condition of the blood clot can be monitored. Guess she will be ringing in 2013 in a the hospital which sucks but better safe than sorry I say. A spokesperson for Hillary Clinton had this to say about her being [...]
