World diaper output may take a hit from blasts at Japan plant

TOKYO (Reuters) - Global diaper output is likely to take a hit from an increase in the price of acrylic acid after a chemical tank explosion at Nippon Shokubai Co's Himeji plant in Japan, a main production base of the ingredient, Japanese media reported.

Nippon Shokubai is one of the world's biggest makers of acrylic acid, the main ingredient of a resin called SAP, which is used in diapers.

The plant produces about 20 percent of the world's SAP and 10 percent of global output of acrylic acid.

Operations at the plant are likely to be halted for a long time and other makers of SAP resins are operating on a full-production footing, leaving little room for back-up production, the Nikkei business daily said on Sunday.

The explosion occurred on Saturday afternoon at an acrylic acid residue tank and the fire spread to another acrylic acid tank and a toluene tank.

Two explosions occurred, killing a 28-year-old fire fighter and injuring 33 people. The fire was put out on Saturday night. (Reporting by Tetsushi Kajimoto; Editing by Robert Birsel)

Moved from Clinton Township, Michigan to Davidson, North Carolina</p> <p>Hello, my name is Carie Brozowski.? I work for TeamHeidi? of Hines and Associates Realty in Cornelius, North Carolina. I recently relocated to Davidson, North Carolina from the State of Michigan, along with my Husband, and three children.? My Husband, Scott is an Electrician, and times have been bad up North for the past several years.? The economy was in a downward spiral, and he continued being laid off from work, or having his pay cut or hours reduced. I too was laid off from my job in Accounting, and forced to take a night job, as we could not afford childcare for our two youngest children.? I began working as a Restaurant/Banquet Manager, and continued to work late nights for the past three years.? Meanwhile, my husband took a job with a local hospital as a Dialysis Machine Technician.? We had great health insurance, but the pay was horrible, and the hours were bad.? He worked the day shift, I worked nights.? He was on call on the weekends, and I had to work every weekend and Holiday.? We had no time together as a family, and we could not get ahead on our bills.</p> <p>Meanwhile, a friend of ours, Mark Lovisa (formerly from Michigan) had moved to Cornelius, North Carolina four years ago, and started his own electrical company. M/I Electric, is a full service Electrical company that is licensed, bonded, and insured. The company is very successful and currently rated #1 on Angie?s List.? Mark, the owner had been asking my husband, Scott if he would be interested in coming down to work, and check things out. So the last week of March, 2012 Scott and I drove to Cornelius for the week.? Scott worked for M/I Electric all week, while I drove around and checked out local neighborhoods and schools. We were able to find a house for rent in Davidson, North Carolina in a subdivision called ?The Farm at Riverpointe?. We fell in love with the area?especially the weather, and so we decided to take a chance, as we figured we had nothing to lose at this point.</p> <p>Now the craziness begins and things started moving very quickly. We drove back to Michigan on Saturday, March 31^st. We contacted all of our family members and informed them of the decision we had made to move. We gave notice to our respective employers. We listed our home with a Real Estate Agent, secured a moving company and began to pack.? Scott drove his truck and left Michigan two weeks later.? The kids and I remained in Michigan, as I had a lot more packing to do, and loose ends to tie up. Scott then flew back to Michigan the end of April, and helped assist the moving company, White Star Movers (a division of Mayflower) with loading our items. It took a total of 9 hours for them to tag, and load everything into the semi. We then sadly locked up our home for the last time. Tears rolled down our eyes with sadness as we pulled out of our driveway, knowing we would never be back. We were leaving 9 years worth of memories behind that we had made in our Michigan home. The moment was bittersweet, as we were sad to say ?goodbye? to the past, but also very much looking forward to what the future had in store for our family.? Although T-2 mycotoxins, a chemical produced by certain fungi and used as a biological weapon, are said to cause both symptoms, they are extremely toxic and potentially fatal, says Kelsey Gregg, a former biosecurity specialist with the Federation of American Scientists.</p><p>?Even at low doses, there would likely be different symptoms from an?aerosol,?including?eye and respiratory problems,? she says.</p><p>Furthermore, the ad hoc pattern of Syrian shellfire does not suggest a determined attempt to deliver biological agents. Ms. Gregg suspects the blame lies with poor sanitary conditions due to the stressful, overcrowded and abnormal circumstances in which the local residents and Syrian refugees are living.</p><p>The Nourat al-Tahta residents' case bears some similarity to a recent incident in Afghanistan, when a group of schoolgirls showing symptoms of poisoning raised fears that the Taliban was poisoning the drinking water supplies at several schools. The forecast for <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348341739_0">Israel</span> on Sunday: balmy late-summer temperatures, uncomfortable humidity along the Mediterranean coast and ... darkness at 6 p.m.?</p><p>Israel moves its clocks back by an hour overnight, putting the country on its winter clock more than a month ahead of Europe and the U.S. and adding to the rising anger that many mainstream Israelis feel toward an ultra-Orthodox minority.</p><p>Many Israelis believe the time change, meant to make it easier to fast on the upcoming <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348341739_1">Yom Kippur</span> holy day, unnecessarily disrupts life and costs the economy millions of dollars. They say the early onset of darkness raises electricity costs, causes more car accidents and gives children less time to play after school.</p><p>While the custom has long bred resentment, the premature arrival of winter hours comes at an especially sensitive time, given the rising backlash against what is widely seen as <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348341739_2">religious coercion</span> by ultra-Orthodox leaders.</p><p>"It's ridiculous. It's just a power play by the ultra-Orthodox to show who's in charge. There is no reason for it being this early," said Raanan Lidji, a 34-year-old high-tech worker from Tel Aviv.</p><p>The move to winter time ahead of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement and holiest date on the Jewish calendar, has been standard practice for decades and enshrined in law since 2005.</p><p>Yom Kippur, which begins on Tuesday evening, is marked by a sundown-to-sundown fast. Orthodox religious parties, which have always held key swing votes in Israel's <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348341739_5">political system</span>, are behind the time change, wanting to decrease the number of waking hours for those fasting.</p><p>Although the length of the fast doesn't change, the sun sets an hour earlier with the winter clock, shortening the more difficult end of the fast. In a similar custom, neighboring Muslim countries sometimes adjust their clocks, even in the middle of summer, during Ramadan to make the monthlong fasting period easier to manage. But the clocks are returned to summer time after Ramadan ends.</p><p>In Israel, the seemingly premature clock change elicits complaints every year from secular and <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348341739_6">modern Orthodox Israelis</span>, who make up some 90 percent of Israel's Jewish population. But this year, the anger has been heightened by a variety of factors.</p><p>Yom Kippur, which falls on a different date each year based on the Jewish calendar, arrives relatively early this year, making the change all the more noticeable.</p><p>It also comes against the backdrop of rising tensions between the secular masses and the politically powerful ultra-Orthodox minority. Much of the anger is being directed at <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348341739_4">Interior Minister Eli Yishai</span>, whose ultra-Orthodox Shas Party has played a key role in shaping the law.</p><p>Yishai has resisted repeated calls to push back the change. In 2010, when it came even earlier in September, nearly 400,000 people signed a petition urging him to change the system.</p><p>Following the outcry, Yishai appointed a committee to study the matter. But its recommendation that the summer clock remain in effect until early October was never implemented.</p><p>"He simply wants to build up the special form of regime to be found in Israel ? a religious 'minocracy,' Not a democracy that represents the majority and takes the minority into account, but rather a minority that controls the majority and does not care a damn about it," wrote Nehemia Shtrasler, an economics affairs columnist at the Haaretz daily.</p><p>A spokesman from the Shas party did not immediately return messages seeking comment. A spokesman for <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348341739_3">Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu</span> also had no immediate comment.</p><p>Ultra-Orthodox parties such as Shas, while representing less than 10 percent of the general population, have long served as kingmakers in Israel's fragmented political system.</p><p>With this power, rabbinical authorities control the rules for marriages, divorces and burials, and ultra-Orthodox males have long received exemptions from compulsory military service in order to pursue religious studies.</p><p>Ultra-Orthodox men often continue their studies well into adulthood, living off welfare subsidies as their secular counterparts work and pay taxes.</p><p>The draft exemptions and study subsidies have become a central issue in Israeli politics. Early this year, the Supreme Court ruled the exemptions illegal and ordered the government to change the law.</p><p>But attempts in parliament to reform the nation's draft law deadlocked, causing one of Netanyahu's coalition partners to quit, and the government missed a deadline to draw up new legislation. With religious leaders saying they will resist any change to the old arrangement, Defense Minister Ehud Barak is currently struggling to figure out a new draft system.</p><p>Adding to the tensions, extremist sects within the ultra-Orthodox community have come under fire in recent months for attempts to ban the mixing of sexes on buses, sidewalks and other public spaces. In Jerusalem, advertisements depicting women have been removed from billboards and buses because of fears that extremists will vandalize them.</p><p>These attempts at coercion have fueled a brewing cultural clash between two Israels. On one hand, the country continues to be a high-tech powerhouse with liberal values that have turned Tel Aviv into a gay mecca. <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348171735_0">Space shuttle Endeavour</span> returned to its California roots Thursday after a wistful cross-country journey that paid homage to <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348171735_2">NASA</span> workers and former Arizona Rep. <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348171735_1">Gabrielle Giffords</span> and her astronaut husband.</p><p>"That's my spaceship," said Endeavour's last commander, <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348171735_6">Mark Kelly</span>, as the couple watched the shuttle loop over Tucson, Ariz.</p><p>Afterward, a 747 jet carrying Endeavour swooped out of the desert sky and glided down a concrete runway at <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348171735_5">Edwards Air Force Base</span>, 100 miles north of <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348171735_3">Los Angeles</span>, not far from where the now-retired shuttle fleet was assembled.</p><p>The shuttle and jumbo jet take off again at sunrise Friday to make low, sweeping passes over Sacramento, San Francisco, Silicon Valley and Los Angeles.</p><p>Next stop: <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348171735_8">Los Angeles International Airport</span> where Endeavour will be prepped for a slow ride on a special flatbed trailer through city streets next month to its final destination as a museum showpiece.</p><p>Endeavour's highly anticipated homecoming was twice delayed by stormy weather along the Gulf of <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348171736_0">Mexico</span>. Early Wednesday, it departed from its Cape Canaveral, Fla., home base, soared over NASA centers in Mississippi and Louisiana, and made a layover in Houston, home of Mission Control. Crowds craned their necks skyward as the shuttle flew low over Florida's Space Coast and Houston.</p><p>After refueling in El Paso, Texas, Thursday, it flew over the White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico, an emergency shuttle landing site used once. Kelly requested that Endeavour sail over Tucson to honor Giffords, who is recovering after suffering a head wound in a shooting rampage last year. Giffords was a member of the House committee on science, space and technology. The couple watched from the roof of a University of Arizona parking garage.</p><p>Former Giffords aide C.J. Karamargin said Giffords was "elated" and started "hooting and hollering" as soon as she spotted Endeavour.</p><p>Kelly said the flyover reminded him of how challenging it was to land the shuttle, because it doesn't use its engines as it returns to Earth. "It doesn't glide very well," Kelly said.</p><p>Endeavour's maiden voyage into space two decades ago ended with a planned touchdown at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center based at Edwards. Unlike a return from orbit, no ear-splitting twin sonic booms accompanied the latest return.</p><p>Known as the baby shuttle, Endeavour was the last one built, replacing Challenger, which exploded during liftoff in 1986. NASA lost a second shuttle, Columbia, which broke apart during re-entry in 2003. A replacement was not built. Fourteen astronauts died in the accidents.</p><p>Six years after the Challenger tragedy, during Endeavour's first flight, three spacewalking astronauts made a daring rescue of a stranded communications satellite. A year later, it was launched on a service repair mission to the Hubble Space Telescope.</p><p>Endeavour flew 25 times, mostly to supply the International Space Station. It spent 299 days in space and circled Earth nearly 4,700 times, logging 123 million miles.</p><p>The <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348171735_7">space shuttle</span> has deep roots in California: The main engines were manufactured in <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348171735_4">Los Angeles</span>' San Fernando Valley. The heat shield tiles that protected the shuttle during re-entry were invented in Silicon Valley. The shuttle's "fly-by-wire" technology was developed in the Los Angeles suburb of Downey.</p><p>Shuttle parts from California and other plants around the country were shipped to Rockwell International's assembly factory in Palmdale near Edwards. For the early part of the shuttle program, landings occurred in the desert before switching to Florida. Edwards remained the backup landing site.</p><p>Endeavour is the second of three surviving shuttles bound for its retirement home. In April, Discovery landed at the Smithsonian Institution's annex in Virginia after victory laps around the White House, the Capitol and the Washington Monument.</p><p>Atlantis will remain in Florida and will be towed in November to the Kennedy Space Center's visitor center.</p><p>Enterprise, a prototype that flew in approach and landing tests but never went into space, sailed up the Hudson River by barge in June en route to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.</p><p>After three decades of service, NASA permanently grounded the shuttles last year under a White House mandate to focus on destinations beyond low-Earth orbit with goals to land astronauts on an asteroid and eventually on Mars.</p><p>The shuttle's main job was hauling spare parts and cargo to the space station, which is near completion. Until private companies can provide regular taxi service to the giant orbiting lab, NASA is relying on Russian rockets.</p><p>NASA deeded Endeavour to the California Science Center last year. The estimated coast-to-coast shipping and handling costs is $28 million to be paid for by the science center. A final cost has not been calculated. NASA officials have said it didn't cost extra to fly over Tucson because it was on the way.</p><p>After landing at LAX Friday, Endeavour will undergo several weeks of preparations for its last mission: Inching through the streets of Los Angeles in early October to its museum home, a 12-mile crawl that required chopping down hundreds of trees and rerouting power lines.</p><p>For shuttle workers, it's a "bittersweet moment. And so do magazines. Recently, I picked up a well-known memoir magazine - a literary journal. The last name of the great Canadian short story writer, Alice Munro, was misspelled. So nothing and no one is perfect. Hot, delicious, with the little stimulating kick of caffeine -- how could it not be? And yet it's true: For most people, regular, moderate coffee consumption is not harmful to your health. </p> <p>In fact, one of the best parts of my job is getting to tell a person that he or she doesn't have to give up their morning cup of coffee. As a clinician, a significant part of my day with patients involves nutritional counseling, which means I often find myself encouraging people to eat less sugar, more vegetables, and fewer processed foods -- a necessary but sometimes challenging process! But, for most people, that morning cup of Joe can stay. And often, the look in their eyes when I tell them they don't have to give it up is priceless. </p> <p>I don't suggest that people can keep drinking coffee simply for the pleasure it brings (though, enjoyment and health are far from antithetical), but also a spate of recent studies have shown that drinking a couple cups of coffee a day just isn't bad for you. According to an article in the <em>American Journal of Clinical Nutrition</em>, "Our results suggest that coffee consumption is not harmful for healthy adults in respect of risk of major chronic disease." Coffee drinkers don't have a higher rate of heart disease or cancer -- or any other major health problems.</p> <p>And not only that, but there's lots of evidence to show that coffee is actually good for you. The same article in <em>Clinical Nutrition</em> finds that coffee drinkers have a lower risk of diabetes. Other research has show that coffee can lower your risk of several kinds of cancer, including prostate and skin cancer -- and a can lead to a very modest reduction in almost a dozen other types of cancer. </p> <p>A recent study out of the University of South Florida and University of Miami found consuming higher levels of caffeine (which came from coffee among those tested) is linked with a delayed onset of Alzheimer's disease. In fact, drinking coffee has even been suggested to increase longevity. </p> <p>And there's evidence that coffee has mental health benefits as well. The results of one study suggested, "Women who consume two to three cups of caffeinated joe per day had a 15 percent lower risk of depression than non-coffee drinkers." </p> <p>Another study pointed to decreased stroke risk among women who regularly consumed coffee,</p> <p>and a recent study pointed to decreased risk of heart failure among those who fulfill their jones for java.</p> <p>The abundance of studies supporting the benefits of coffee can actually be supportive to our health, because it reduces the stress around a habit that we may have erroneously believed was not good for us. It's nice to have some relief from the "food police." When our chosen rituals can be enjoyed without guilt, there is a benefit to our emotional health. Additionally, the benefits of coffee can extend beyond what the studies show, to the psychological, societal and cultural benefits of the world's most popular beverage. </p> <p>For millions of people, the morning's first cup of coffee is a comforting and much-looked-forward-to ritual, one that can make dragging yourself out of bed and commuting to work a little bit more bearable -- maybe even add a bit of joy. (And, as recent studies have shown, smiling is good for your health too!) </p> <p>A good cup of coffee can lead to sensory delight. Obviously, the taste of a good cup of coffee is without parallel -- but even a bad cup of coffee has its charms. The appeal of coffee, however, is not limited to a single sense.</p> <p>The strong, distinct aroma of coffee -- released from grinding beans or even just walking by a coffee shop -- also brings pleasure, which increases dopamine in your brain (which has been correlated with happiness and health). The sight of a coffee shop can often bring a feeling of relief. There's an element of touch: gripping a hot cup of coffee on a brutal winter's day, or the chill of a delicious iced coffee (more appropriate on days like the ones most of us have been having). </p> <p>And for true enthusiasts, even the sound of the beans grinding can invoke delight, as can the whirring of a milk-steamer or the barista's chatter. Perhaps even on a larger level, the sound of a potential suitor finally asking, "Would you like to meet for coffee?"</p> <p>That social element of coffee is unparalleled. Coffee appeals to our sense of serving and being served. Offering someone a cup of coffee and receiving a cup of coffee has become kind of a universal symbol of hospitality</p> <p>Coffee shops can be inspiring gathering places -- one of the few public spaces we have left. People gather in groups to chat, meet for first dates, or sit quietly and read. They host music shows, hang local artists' work, and are places to hang fliers, advertise apartments for rent or look for missing cats. </p> <p>Like all things, coffee is best enjoyed in moderation (more notes on how to do that below, but the key word in the sentence might be "enjoy," since providing enjoyment is what coffee does best! </p> <p><strong>How to keep your coffee consumption healthy:</strong></p> <p>Before you order that extra large triple latte, keep in mind that more experts agree it is best to limit your intake to one to two cups a day. Use common sense -- some people are sensitive to caffeine and should limit or choose decaf. Too much caffeine can contribute to insomnia, nervousness, anxiety, gastrointestinal issues, and heart rhythm concerns. Pregnant woman and those with blood pressure issues should check with their doctor. Also, excess sugar and cream in those fancy coffee drinks are not recommended.</p> <p><em>Tips for healthy coffee:</em></p> <p>1) If choosing decaf, go for Swiss water process decaf vs. the chemical solvent process.</p> <p>2) It is best to choose organic coffee when possible.
