Ex-NBC chief Zucker takes the helm at CNN

5 hrs.

CNN on Thursday named former NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker as its new top executive, searching for a way to turn around the original cable news network as it has lagged behind rivals Fox News Channel and MSNBC.?

Zucker will start in January. He will be based in New York and report to Phil Kent, who runs all of the Turner networks for parent company Time Warner.?

"I spent the most rewarding years of my career as a journalist, and it's where I look forward to spending many more," said Zucker, who shot to fame as the executive producer of NBC's "Today" show at the start of its morning dynasty in the 1990s.?

Zucker moved on to Hollywood as NBC's entertainment president. He became head of NBC Universal, and achieved great financial success for the company by overseeing its highly profitable cable networks.?

One of them was MSNBC, which has become more successful by appealing to a progressive audience. CNN has steadfastly maintained a more traditional approach and its biggest issue has been the same as it has been for two decades: how to get an audience to stay with the network when there is not a big news story dominating the public's attention.?

While a great deal of attention has been paid to CNN's problems in prime-time for its domestic network, Zucker will command a much larger and more successful portfolio, including HLN, CNN International and the CNN.com website. A CNN product is in televisions on some 265 million homes across the world.?

Zucker has been seen as the lead candidate for the job since his predecessor, Jim Walton, announced in the summer he was leaving. Zucker has spent the past year helping Katie Couric put her talk show on the air.?

"Jeff's experience as a news executive is unmatched for its breadth and success," Kent said. "He built and sustained the number-one brand in morning news, and under his watch NBC's signature news programming set a standard for quality and professionalism."?

The Associated Press contributed to this report.?

Fighting cuts access to Damascus airport, flights suspended

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels battled forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad just outside Damascus on Thursday, cutting access to its international airport, and Dubai-based Emirates airline and EgyptAir stopped flights to the Syrian capital.

The Internet and some telephone lines went down across Syria. Rebels and the government traded blame for the blackout, the worst communications outage in 20 months of conflict.

Rebels fighting to topple Assad have been making gains around Syria by overrunning military bases and have been ramping up attacks on Damascus, his seat of power.

A rebel fighter who identified himself as Abu Omar, a member of the Jund Allah brigade, told Reuters that insurgents fired mortars at the airport's runways and were blocking the road linking it with the capital.

Speaking from the scene of the fighting, he said insurgents were not inside the airport but were able to block access to and from it.

A spokesman for a rebel Military Council in Damascus, Musaab Abu Qitada, said an artillery round was fired at a military site inside the airport and that fighting was now less than a kilometer (mile) away from the complex.

"We want to liberate the airport because of reports we see and our own information we have that shows civilian airplanes are being flown in here with weapons for the regime. It is our right to stop this," he told Reuters on Skype from Damascus.

U.S. and European officials said rebels were making gains in Syria, gradually eroding Assad's power, but said the fighting had not yet shifted decisively in their favor.

Two Austrian soldiers in a U.N. peacekeeping force deployed to monitor the frontier with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights were wounded when their convoy came under fire near Damascus airport, Austria's defense ministry said. Syria state television said the soldiers were wounded by gunfire when rebels attacked an army position near the airport road.

The Information Ministry later said the highway to the airport was safe after security forces cleared it of "terrorists." Rebels said fighting in the area was continuing. The ministry said the airport was operating regularly, but there were no flights scheduled to land in the evening.

The accounts of fighting could not be verified immediately because of tight restrictions on media access to Syria.

But many airlines had already halted flights. Emirates suspended daily service to Damascus "until further notice." EgyptAir also said it was suspending all flights to Damascus because of "the deterioration of the security situation" there.

An EgyptAir flight that left at 1:30 p.m. (1130 GMT) landed in Damascus on schedule but the pilot was instructed to take off straight back to Egypt, airport sources in Cairo said.

INTERNET, PHONE LINES DOWN

Residents said the Internet in Damascus crashed in the early afternoon, and mobile and land telephone lines were functioning only intermittently.

A blog post on Renesys, a U.S. company which tracks Internet traffic worldwide, said that at 12:26 pm (1026 GMT), the entire country's Internet connectivity shut down completely.

The government has been accused of cutting communications in previous assaults on rebel-held areas in Syria. Syria's minister of information said "terrorists" were responsible for the Internet shutdown, while the telecommunications minister blamed what he said was a fault in the main communications network.

The past two weeks have seen rebels seizing a series of army bases across Syria, exposing Assad's loss of control in northern and eastern regions despite the devastating air power that he has used to bombard opposition strongholds, killing dozens of civilians as well. More than 40,000 people have been killed since the uprising began, according to opposition groups.

Rebels and activists said the fighting along the road to Damascus airport, southeast of the capital, was heavier in that area than at any other time in the conflict.

"PREPARING FOR MAJOR BATTLE"

Nabeel al-Ameer, from the rebel Military Council, said a large number of army reinforcements had arrived along the road after three days of scattered clashes ending with rebels seizing side streets to the north of it.

He said he hoped the proximity of the rebels to the airport would dissuade authorities from using it to import military equipment, but the priority now was to block the road.

There are several military airports around Damascus that remain under government control.

A Syrian security source told Reuters on condition of anonymity that the army had started a "cleansing operation" in the capital to confront rebel advances.

The source, who is from Assad's elite 4th Armoured Division, said one of the aims of the operation was to seal off the suburbs - where rebels are dominant - from the city center.

Assad is fighting an insurgency that grew out of peaceful demonstrations for democratic reform but has escalated, after a military crackdown on protesters, into a bloody civil war.

Syrian warplanes on Thursday bombed Kafr Souseh, Douma and Daraya, neighborhoods that fringe the center of the city where rebels have managed to hide out and ambush army units.

Activists said the areas were taking one of the heaviest poundings they had seen in months.

A senior European Union official said that Assad - whose family has held power in Syria for 42 years - might be preparing for a military showdown around Damascus by isolating the city with a network of checkpoints.

"The rebels are gaining ground but it is still rather slow. We are not witnessing the last days yet," the official said on condition of anonymity.

"On the outskirts of Damascus, there are mortars and more attacks. The regime is thinking of protecting itself ... with checkpoints in the next few days ... (It) seems the regime is preparing for major battle on Damascus."

A U.S. official said the rebels were "making important tactical gains that could eventually trigger a strategic shift in the conflict."

"They haven't reached that point yet, but the span of regime control is narrowing, and Assad's forces are having greater difficulty beating back the insurgents' progress," said the official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton echoed that view in remarks in a speech in Washington.

"I don't know that you can say that for the entire country it is yet at a tipping point, but it certainly seems that the regime will be much harder pressed in the next months," she said.

WARY BIG POWERS

Most foreign powers have condemned Assad but stopped short of arming rebel fighters as they fear heavy weapons could make their way into the hands of radical Islamist units, who have grown increasingly prominent in the insurgency.

Rebels decry their supporters for not providing them with surface-to-air missiles that they say they need to counter the air force. But recent looting of anti-aircraft missiles from army bases, as well as a slow stream of such weapons believed to be coming from Gulf Arab adversaries of Assad, has allowed them to shoot down some helicopters and jets.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told a Pentagon news conference the United States had not provided anti-aircraft missiles to the Syrian opposition, saying it was focused on nonlethal aid and humanitarian relief.

"Let me say unequivocally that we have not provided any of those kinds of missiles to the opposition forces located in Syria," he said.

Panetta and Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak both told the news conference they believed Assad would ultimately fall.

"It's criminal behavior on a global scale what he is doing to his own people, using jet fighters and helicopters and artillery and tanks, killing his own people," Barak said. "The whole world is watching and somehow it's not easy to mobilize enough sense of purpose and unity of action and political will to translate ... our feelings about what happens there into action to stop it."

Peter Bouckeart, emergencies director at Human Rights Watch, said the surface-to-air missiles used so far appeared to have been captured from the Syrian military and there was no evidence any of the ones used to date "have come from outside Syria."

He said the number of these missiles in rebel hands was probably over 20 but could rise significantly if rebels continue to capture military bases.

The relatively small number of anti-aircraft missiles looted so far means that many rebel-controlled areas of the country remain vulnerable to air strikes. The Observatory said 15 citizens, including children and women, were killed during a bombing in Aleppo's Ansari district on Thursday.

Super Bowl In Denver? Broncos, Mayor Hancock Want Mile High City To Host As Early As 2018

Not only do we have a possible Super Bowl bound Denver Broncos in 2012 -- Mile High City may have the actual Super Bowl as early as 2018.

Mayor Michael Hancock, an NFL fan, told The Denver Post that the city has put in a bid to bring the NFL's biggest game of the year to Denver in 2018, 2019 or 2020.

"I think Denver would be head and shoulders above any other city to compete to host a Super Bowl," Hancock told The Denver Post.

ESPN's Bill Williamson reports that the biggest challenge facing Denver hosting the Super Bowl is cold weather. In 2014, East Rutherford, N.J. -- home of the New York Giants and Jets -- will host Super Bowl XLVIII and will become the first outdoor cold-weather venue to host the big game and if all goes well weather-wise at MetLife Stadium, perhaps that will make a good case for Sports Authority Field at Mile High in 2018 or beyond.

In 2018, Super Bowl LII will take place on Feb. 4, and if Denver snags the coveted hosting duties, CBS Sports reports that the average high temperature for that date is 41 degrees with an average low of 18 degrees. Additionally, February is generally not known as a high snowfall month for the City of Denver which would be appealing to the NFL.

The Associated Press reports that the NFL is expected to announce the cities which are eligible to submit a bid next year.

Wall Street flat, trading cautious; Obama to speak on 'cliff'

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks were little changed on Friday as investors were hesitant to make big bets ahead of a statement by President Obama on the progress of budget talks in Washington that have recently driven volatility in financial markets.

U.S. President Barack Obama, visiting a factory in Pennsylvania, will press his case on raising taxes on the wealthy to narrow the deficit. He is expected to make a statement around midday that is likely to impact markets.

"There is always hope in those situations that he (Obama) is going to announce some type of positive development," said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment officer of Solaris Group in Bedford Hills, New York. "We see how violently the market swings on positive and negative announcements."

Trading has been choppy as investors react to mixed statements from policymakers in Washington about discussions on averting the "fiscal cliff," spending cuts and tax hikes that will come into effect in the new year and could cause a recession, according to worst-case predictions.

Corporations continued to anticipate a harsher tax regime next year. Whole Foods Market Inc was the latest to announce a special cash dividend of $2.00 per share to skirt higher dividend tax rates in 2013. The stock was up 0.6 percent at $93.60.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 5.63 points, or 0.04 percent, to 13,027.45. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index dropped 0.58 points, or 0.04 percent, to 1,415.37. The Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 3.43 points, or 0.11 percent, to 3,008.59.

The S&P 500 was on track to end the month 0.3 percent higher, after declining nearly 2 percent in October. The index has recovered 4.5 percent since shedding 8 percent following the U.S. presidential election earlier in November.

"The correction from the S&P 500's September peak has allowed overbought momentum and optimistic sentiment conditions to recede, and we believe the index is closer to an intermediate-term buy signal than a sell signal," said Ari Wald, analyst at PrinceRidge Group.

Yum Brands Inc shares slumped 9.4 percent to $67.42. The company said late Thursday it expects fourth-quarter sales at established restaurants to drop in China, where a cooling economy is making it difficult to exceed the 21-percent gain it enjoyed there a year earlier.

After a close relationship for several years, Facebook Inc and Zynga Inc revised terms of a partnership agreement between the companies. Under the new pact, Zynga will have limited ability to promote its site on Facebook.

Zynga shares dropped 5.3 percent to $2.48. Facebook shares were down 1.2 percent at $26.99.

The markets' reaction to data on Friday was muted.

A report showed business activity in the U.S. Midwest expanded for the first time since August, buoyed by an improvement in the labor market.

Separately, data showed U.S. consumer spending fell in October for the first time in five months as income growth stalled, suggesting slower economic growth in the fourth quarter.

Apple Inc's latest iPhone has received final clearance from Chinese regulators, paving the way for a December debut in a highly competitive market where the lack of a new model had severely eroded its share of product sales. Shares of Apple were down 0.7 percent at $585.29.

Verisign Inc said the U.S. Department of Commerce had approved its agreement with ICANN to run the .com internet registry, but the company wouldn't be able to raise prices as before. The stock dropped 14.1 percent to $33.80 in late morning trading.

Health: New Way To Freeze Away Cancer ? CBS Philly

By Stephanie Stahl

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? A new way to freeze away cancer and a first in Philadelphia. 3 On Your Side Health Reporter Stephanie Stahl is here with exclusive details on the minimally invasive treatment.

This is a new patient friendly way to treat cancer of the esophagus, that?s the tube like structure that runs from the throat to the stomach.
Sonny and Clara Galati have been married 42 years. They have a life filled with laughter, family and exotic travel.

When he was diagnosed with early stage cancer of the esophagus two months ago, they were devastated.

?It was like everything stopped, and I wondered what would we do without him,? said Clara.

Sonny became one of the first patients in Philadelphia to get a new treatment at Temple University Hospital.

?There?s no cutting or surgery involved. There?s no chemotherapy or radiation that?s involved,? said Dr. Michael Smith, who is using a new form of Cryotherapy. It?s called truFreeze, used to zap cancer cells in the esophagus.

?This is a brand new device that maximizes the efficiency of the spraying to allow us to treat more effectively and in a more patient friendly way with less risks of side effects,? said Dr. Smith, who is a paid consultant for truFreeze. He says the patient is asleep during the outpatient procedure.

The freezing spray comes from a catheter guided down the throat with a camera mounted endoscope. Inside the esophagus the frozen, dead cancer cells turn white.

?This is very much a minimally invasive, patient friendly way to kill these cells,? said Dr. Smith.

?There?s no post pain or anything I felt from the procedure. It was very easy to go through,? said Sonny.

And now from fearing the worst, the Galati?s are back to planning more adventures together.

?I?m at the right place at the right time. I?m blessed I could do this, that this is possible,? said Sonny.

Depending on the cancer, patients usually get a series of cryotherapy treatments.

It?s also used for a condition called Barrett?s esophagus, that?s caused by acid reflux and increases the cancer risk.

Conversations Concerning Sex and Sexuality ? Counselling Connect

The mind of a child is a precious thing.? Parents frequently struggle with knowing when, why, and how to discuss sex and sexuality with their child.? Parents may have a wide range of questions themselves pertaining to the timing, the nature, and appropriateness of such conversations.????

  • When is it appropriate to discuss sex and sexuality with a child??
  • Should a parent inform a child of sexual acts?? Or, should a child learn about sexual relationship on his / her own??
  • How old should a child be when he / she learn of sexual relationships?
  • Is it ever appropriate to discuss sex with your child??
  • Should the mother or father discuss the sex and sexuality with their child? Or both?
  • When is it not appropriate to converse about sex and sexuality?

It is important that children are taught at a young age about their own sexuality.? Parents may and often have to tackle such questions as:? Who am I? Why do I have a vagina, while my little brother has a penis?? Why are there boys and girls?? What are the differences between boys and girls?? Why do boys and girls have their own restrooms? Am I less a person because I have different anatomical parts??

Parents should be made aware that not all conversations are appropriate.? If I discuss my sexual encounters with my wife, then I am crossing a barrier of safety and care.? However, if I am discussing the unique anatomical differences between a boy and a girl, then I am conversing appropriately with my child.? Every child should be made aware that his / her sexual anatomy is a healthy and beautiful thing.? No child should ever be taught to be ashamed of his / her physical anatomy.? All children should be taught at an early age appropriate and inappropriate touch.??? Why?? If we understand our physicality and we are taught to respect our anatomy, then we are less likely to allow anyone to disrespect our person.?

A child should be made to feel comfortable with sex and sexuality.? Importantly, children who are left to determine and distinguish right from wrong, appropriate verses inappropriate; may have a higher likelihood of making personal errors in their personal development.?? A child should be guided through such prudent matters such as sexual relationships, intimacy, and his / her own sexuality identity (gender).?

GENDER AWARENESS AND SEXUALITY

A child who is aware of his / her body?s anatomical parts is an informed child.? A child should be informed of his / her body?s sexuality for more than purposes of sexual intimacy.? The physical body is a complex device.? If a child is made aware of his / her physical anatomy he / she is more apt to be capable of discussing pains, changes, and queries about his/her anatomy.?? If a child is unaware of his / her own anatomy, he/she may find it challenging not only describing difficulties or changes within his / her physical being, but may find it painfully awkward to discuss it with mom, dad, and/or a professional.??

Children begin becoming aware of their sexuality at a very young age.?? The development of our gender consciousness begins around 2 to 3 years of age.? This very awareness has been labeled and defined to be our gender identity.? A person?s gender identity is an awareness of his / her physical anatomy, personhood (being male or female), and his / her gender distinction from being either male or female.?

?By the age of three, your child will probably begin to ask you for information about sex. It will help if you take as much care in preparing yourself for your child?s sexuality education as you do when preparing to teach him or her about health and physical safety.? (Pike, 2001, Online) For many parents, sex and sexuality is an unbearable task.? Parents frequently ask, ?It feels personally awkward to discuss sex with my young child.?? ?Will I not be encouraging my child to be sexually promiscuous if I discuss sex with him / her at an early age??

?Don?t wait for your child to start the conversation. Many parents put off talking to their children about sexuality, assuming that a child will ask when he (she) wants to know something. But some children are reluctant to begin these talks, and others simply aren?t the type who ask a lot of questions. Do you wait for your child to ask about your religious faith, personal safety and other important topics before discussing them? The answer, more than likely, is no ? and sexuality should be no different. It?s a parent?s responsibility to introduce the topic, little by little. Your child might never ask, but he (she) still needs to know.? (Needlman & Haffner, 2012, Online)

PARENTS FEARS, PHOBIAS, FRUSTRATIONS, AND CONCERNS

As a parent, it is important that you are diligent in the raising of your child.? If you are concerned that you may be ?inappropriate? or ?uncomfortable? discussing your child?s sexuality or matters of sex; there are a number of good resources, books, and practitioners that may help you with your personal dilemma.?

TACKLING THE TALK

As a parent of two daughters, I too have my personal and professional concerns about tackling the conversation.?? Am I, a man with a doctorate of philosophy in clinical psychology suppose to tackle this most prudent question?? Or, should I hand this topic off to my spouse making her solely responsible to discuss this most prudent topic?? The answer is not simple, but here is my professional proposal.? Children need to know that both parents are interested in their sex and sexuality.? A child needs to feel comfortable presenting his / her concerns, questions, and interests with either parent.? Importantly, if parents are comfortable with sex and their sexuality, then a child should not be made to feel uncomfortable.

?In talking with your child or adolescent, it is helpful to:?

  • Encourage your child to talk and ask questions
  • Maintain a calm and non-critical atmosphere for discussions.
  • Use words that are understandable and comfortable
  • Try to determine your child?s level of knowledge and understanding.
  • Keep your sense of humor and don?t be afraid to talk about your own discomfort.
  • Relate sex to love, intimacy, caring, and respect for oneself and one?s partner.
  • Be open in sharing your values and concerns.
  • Discuss the importance of responsibility for choices and decisions.
  • Help your child to consider the pros and cons of choices.? (American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, 2005, Online)

A child should never be made to feel that sex and/or his / her sexuality is taboo or a mistake.? A child should always be made to feel comfortable with discussions of sex and sexuality.?? If a child is made to feel that sex or his / her sexuality is wrong, then that child has a higher probability of developing an issue pertaining to sex and/or his / her personal sexuality.?

?It is important to talk about the responsibilities and consequences that come from being sexually active.? Pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and feelings about sex are important issues to be discussed.? Talking to your children can help them make the decisions that are best for them without feeling pressured to do something before they are ready.? Helping children understand that these are decisions that require maturity and responsibility will increase the chance that they make good choices.? (American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, 2005, Online)

During the talk, parents should inform their child of the beauty within their relationship.? As parents, it is important to be comfortable with your own sexuality and sexual relationship.? Otherwise, you may be offering a ?sexual talk,? but the child will distinguish between your personal level of comfortability and uncomfortableness.? Furthermore, if a parent is uncomfortable with his / her own sexuality or sexual relationship, then the parent will be projecting a number of conflicting messages: (a) listen to my advice, but watch me travel a different path, (b) ignore your true nature and desires, (c) live a personal mistruth, (d) do not always tell the truth, (e) while I offer you one way of living, I will follow a different message all together.?

The talk should always include personal safety and care.?? A child should never be made to feel as though he / she? must have a sexual relations or sexual encounter.?? If a child is taught to respect his / her own personal space and body at an early age, then the likelihood of having someone mistreat him / her or disrespect him / her is decreased drastically.?? All persons, should feel safe within their own body and as an individual.? No one should be empowered to make you feel unsafe.?

A child should never be made to feel unsafe with their own personal level of sexual intimacy.? A healthy discussion around sexual exploration (masturbation) should never be turned into something dirty, disgusting, or awkward.? Masturbation is a natural way of life.? A child who is capable of pleasing themselves, will be enabled to know his / her personal desires and personal level of comfortableness.?? ?Concerns regarding masturbation, menstruation, contraception, pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases are common.? Some adolescents also struggle with conflicts around family, religious or cultural values.? Open communication and accurate information from parents increases the chance that teens will postpone sex and will use appropriate methods of birth control once they begin.? (American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, 2005, Online)? The key to any relationship or sexual encounter is to always use safety and care.? Never allow yourself to be sexually manipulated or exploited.?

Sexual relationships are about creating a personal level of cohesiveness.? There should always be a connection, a desire, and a choice when pursuing a sexual relationship.?? A child should be made aware that all sexual relations should be mutually acknowledged and acceptable.?

The life of a child is precious.? All children deserve to feel comfortable, acceptable, approvable, worthy, and loved.?? No child should be made to feel as though he / she are dirty or disgusting.? No child should be made to feel that sex and/or one?s sexuality is an ugly or repugnant part of his / her being.?? Sexuality is a remarkable aspect of the human condition.?? Children should be taught the inner and outer beauty related to one?s sexuality and personal relationship to sex.?

Landscape Supply and Designing | Home Improvement For All

landscape supply NJLandscape designing has become as important and common as interior design, because owning a garden supposes arranging it so as to feel comfortable and peaceful when spending time in it. It is essential for a garden or yard to be both beautiful and practical, and to that end, owners appeal to specialized designing and development companies. Designing the garden supposes esthetic sense, solid ecology and horticulture knowledge, as well as garden history, art, architecture, industrial design, geology and environmental psychology knowledge.

Exactly like in architecture plans, landscape design must be based on previous social, geological and ecological conditions investigation, and must propose a creative intervention of the given space. There are specific instructions related to composition, concept and design, soil preparation and plant maintenance. Of course, proper landscape supply needs to be used.

The esthetics of a garden must not be affected by its functionality. Moreover, all adjacent elements that help develop a harmonious life within the garden space must be conceived in virtue of an esthetic principle. In comparison to territorial development, where functionality is more important, a garden needs to be a work or art. Therefore, landscape supply refers, first of all, to all the gardening tools: scissors, rakes, shovels, mowing machines and so on. Secondly, it implies all the irrigation system instruments: canals, pipes, hoses. Then, all the plant seeds, flowerpots, fertilizers are also included in landscape supply.

Other components are objects or constructions that beautify the garden, such as: garden furniture, basins, swimming pools, cupolas, gazebos, fountains, concrete decorations etc. At times, people with very spacious gardens, build tennis courts, mini golf courses or football fields. These are more complex developments that imply massive landscape supply, like excavators or elevators, which are put at disposal by construction companies.

Once the garden fundament is achieved, the plants, alleys, water canals and elevation are decided, planting and vegetation arrangements can be accomplished. Because it supposes a distinct technology, the lawn must be treated differently. It is considered part of landscape supply, because there are pre-grown lawn carpets that ensure an immediate effect. Lawn can be seeded, too, but it takes months for the grass to grow. Because of temperature variations, there is a multitude of parasites and diseases that attack plants all through the year. Thus, services are diverse and oriented towards a good protection against pests, companies providing professional prevention and destroying solutions, which are landscape supply items.

Landscape Supply and Designing has been brought to you by Peach Country Landscape Supply located in beautiful Mullica Hill NJ. ?Peach Country is the leading landscape supply NJ company for the entire region.

Report: Economy boosted entrepreneurship in 2011

NEW YORK (AP) ? The slow improvement in the economy gave a huge boost to entrepreneurship in the U.S. last year, according to a study released Thursday.

More than 29 million people were starting or running new businesses in 2011, the study by Babson College in Wellesley, Mass., and Baruch College in New York shows. That was a 60 percent gain from 2010, when entrepreneurship was hurt by uncertainty about the economy.

The gain also matched the increase in entrepreneurship recorded in 2005, when the economy and small businesses were booming.

A pickup in entrepreneurship indicates that people were getting more confident about the economy and were therefore willing to take a chance on starting a business. However, it also reflects a still-weak job market: Many people chose to start companies because they couldn't find jobs or were tired of looking.

Still, researchers at the colleges say the report's findings are a positive sign for the economy. They found that nearly 40 percent of the entrepreneurs they counted expected to create more than five new jobs each in the next five years. Many economists have said the economy can't gain momentum unless small businesses pick up the pace of their hiring.

The economy has been showing signs of a slow but steady recovery, led by an improving housing market and greater consumer confidence. Next week will bring several new reports, including the government's look at the job market in November.

New method of manufacturing smallest structures in electronics: Discovery could revolutionize semiconductors

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? A completely new method of manufacturing the smallest structures in electronics could make their manufacture thousands of times quicker, allowing for cheaper semiconductors. The findings have been published in the latest issue of Nature.

Instead of starting from a silicon wafer or other substrate, as is usual today, researchers have made it possible for the structures to grow from freely suspended nanoparticles of gold in a flowing gas.

Behind the discovery is Lars Samuelson, Professor of Semiconductor Physics at Lund University, Sweden, and head of the University's Nanometre Structure Consortium. He believes the technology will be ready for commercialisation in two to four years' time. A prototype for solar cells is expected to be completed in two years.

"When I first suggested the idea of getting rid of the substrate, people around me said 'you're out of your mind, Lars; that would never work'. When we tested the principle in one of our converted ovens at 400?C, the results were better than we could have dreamt of," he says.

"The basic idea was to let nanoparticles of gold serve as a substrate from which the semiconductors grow. This means that the accepted concepts really were turned upside down!"

Since then, the technology has been refined, patents have been obtained and further studies have been conducted. In the article in Nature, the researchers show how the growth can be controlled using temperature, time and the size of the gold nanoparticles.

Recently, they have also built a prototype machine with a specially built oven. Using a series of ovens, the researchers expect to be able to 'bake' the nanowires, as the structures are called, and thereby develop multiple variants, such as p-n diodes. A further advantage of the technology is avoiding the cost of expensive semiconductor wafers.

"In addition, the process is not only extremely quick, it is also continuous. Traditional manufacture of substrates is batch-based and is therefore much more time-consuming," adds Lars Samuelson.

At the moment, the researchers are working to develop a good method to capture the nanowires and make them self-assemble in an ordered manner on a specific surface. This could be glass, steel or another material suited to the purpose. The reason why no one has tested this method before, in the view of Professor Samuelson, is that today's method is so basic and obvious. Such things tend to be difficult to question.

However, the Lund researchers have a head start thanks to their parallel research based on an innovative method in the manufacture of nanowires on semiconductor wafers, known as epitaxy -- consequently, the researchers have chosen to call the new method aerotaxy. Instead of sculpting structures out of silicon or another semiconductor material, the structures are instead allowed to develop, atomic layer by atomic layer, through controlled self-organisation.

The structures are referred to as nanowires or nanorods. The breakthrough for these semiconductor structures came in 2002 and research on them is primarily carried out at Lund, Berkeley and Harvard universities.

The Lund researchers specialise in developing the physical and electrical properties of the wires, which helps create better and more energy-saving solar cells, LEDs, batteries and other electrical equipment that is now an integrated part of our lives.

Besides Lars Samuelson, the other authors of the article are: Magnus Heurlin, Martin Magnusson, David Lindgren, Martin Ek, Reine Wallenberg and Knut Deppert, all employed at Lund University, except for Martin Magnusson, who works at start-up company Sol Voltaics AB.

About semiconductors Semiconductors are materials that neither conduct electricity as well as metals, nor stop a current as effectively as insulators -- silicon and germanium are two examples. These properties may not sound attractive, but in actual fact they are excellent. The reason is that we can influence the conductive capacity of the materials, for example by introducing impurity atoms, known as doping. Materials with different types of doping can be combined to manufacture products such as transistors, solar cells or LEDs.

The Latest Greek Debt Deal: Why This Time Is Different

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras arrives for a press conference at the E.U. headquarters in Brussels on Nov. 23, 2012.

I must admit to having tuned out the Greek debt crisis a bit. It?s not that the effective bankruptcy of Greece no longer has implications for the world economy ? the country could still be forced from Europe?s monetary union, with potentially destabilizing consequences. Nor has the suffering of the Greek people diminished. Unemployment has soared over 25%, and with more budget cutting to come, the economic prospects for the Greeks are unlikely to brighten anytime soon. Yet the repetitive antics of the leaders of Europe in their endless negotiations over what to do with Greece can easily lull even the most curious into a stupor. For three years now, European policymakers have been bickering, procrastinating and denying the reality of what economists have been saying since the beginning: that Greece?s debt is unsustainable, the bailouts as structured would never bring the burden down to a more tolerable level and the only way to resolve the crisis is some serious debt relief.

That?s a step European leaders have been reluctant to take. It is true that earlier this year a swap of Greek bonds took a bite out of the country?s debt load by forcing a ?haircut,? the cute word bankers use to describe losses, onto creditors. But that restructuring included only private bondholders, not official creditors. It became clear almost immediately that the relief offered to Greece wasn?t going deep enough. To get Greece?s government debt-to-GDP ratio to a more acceptable level, like 120% (from some 170% now), Europe?s leaders were going to have to reduce Greece?s debt burden even more, and that potentially meant having to take a haircut of their own. Doing so, however, was politically difficult. The two bailouts of Greece were unpopular with voters in the richer nations of Europe to begin with; taking losses on that aid would be even less popular. So the negotiations over the Greek bailout dragged on and on and on, with the debt can getting kicked?down the road again and again.

(MORE: On Europe?s Thanksgiving Menu: Stiffing Greece)

So when I began reading on Tuesday morning about the latest agreement reached by European Union leaders, I expected my eyes to glaze over as usual. But instead, I got the news equivalent of a caffeine jolt. This time was different.

The reason is that Europe?s leaders have finally mustered the will to take a political risk. The framework of the deal, which you can read in this formal statement issued at the end of the latest conference, does make progress in helping Greece bring down its debt level by potentially inflicting losses onto official creditors. Europe?s finance ministers agreed to sharply lower the interest rate charged on some bailout loans, while other loans will see interest payments deferred. Meanwhile, the maturities on all the bailout loans will be extended. By making such concessions, European policymakers hope to shrink Greece?s debt burden to 124% of GDP by 2020 (a relaxation from the original 120%) and to 110% or lower by 2022. In all, the measures should reduce Greece?s debt by a hefty 20% of GDP. The governments also agreed to finally release a tranche of bailout funds to Greece that had been held up for weeks, which will allow Athens to keep itself afloat.

E.U. officials were beaming about the agreement, as they always do whenever they reach any kind of decision. But will the deal actually work? Is the Greek debt crisis finally under control?

Of course not. This is the euro zone, after all, and that means key details of the deal were left unspecified and the overall program still falls short of what is likely necessary.

(MORE: A Deeply Divided European Union Faces Its Own Budgetary Cliff)

The first problem concerns a proposed debt buyback scheme, in which the Greek government would purchase and retire bonds at a discount. The details of the plan were left undetermined, which means we don?t know how much debt will be involved in the end. Then there is the long-standing concern that the Greek government won?t fulfill its side of the bailout bargain. Politicians in Athens will have to show some serious guts to enforce the austerity measures demanded by its European creditors in the face of a crumbling economy and an angry populace. The austerity itself is part of the problem. The more Greece cuts, the more the economy sinks, making it harder to meet fiscal targets. Even more, early analysis of the agreement figures that European governments are going to have to take even further steps toward reducing Greece?s debt if they plan to meet the 2022 target. That likely means outright write-offs that would inflict heavier losses. Here?s the opinion of Soci?t? G?n?rale analysts on the deal:

At this stage, we have yet to see the detailed numbers behind the new agreement, but are encouraged that the measures announced mark an additional step in the right direction. Our concern remains that this will not suffice to make Greek public finances sustainable and allow Greece to return to market financing in 2017. The potential for shortfalls on implementation of austerity and structural reform are one risk, but our real concern is economic growth ? While this plan should buy time up to the German election in the autumn of 2013, we expect additional measures to help Greek debt sustainability will be required beyond this date ? In our opinion, something more substantial will be required, with official sector debt forgiveness a very real, but politically challenging, possibility.

An encouraging sign, though, is that Europe?s policymakers seem to acknowledge that possibility. The usually austere German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble left the door open to more debt relief. ?When Greece has achieved, or is about to achieve, a primary surplus and fulfilled all of its conditions, we will, if need be, consider further measures for the reduction of the total debt,? he said, according to Reuters.

So even if this latest agreement is far from perfect, it is ? amazingly?? a positive sign. The veil of delusion that has hampered Europe?s willingness to tackle the Greek problem seems to be lifting, and the commitment to making potentially politically difficult decisions appears to be building. The Greek story might get a lot more interesting.

Vitamin D linked to lower rates of tooth decay

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? A new review of existing studies points toward a potential role for vitamin D in helping to prevent dental caries, or tooth decay.

The review, published in the December issue of Nutrition Reviews, encompassed 24 controlled clinical trials, spanning the 1920s to the 1980s, on approximately 3,000 children in several countries. These trials showed that vitamin D was associated with an approximately 50 percent reduction in the incidence of tooth decay.

"My main goal was to summarize the clinical trial database so that we could take a fresh look at this vitamin D question," said Dr. Philippe Hujoel of the University of Washington, who conducted the review.

While vitamin D's role in supporting bone health has not been disputed, significant disagreement has historically existed over its role in preventing caries, Hujoel noted. The American Medical Association and the U.S. National Research Council concluded around 1950 that vitamin D was beneficial in managing dental caries. The American Dental Association said otherwise -- based on the same evidence. In 1989, the National Research Council, despite new evidence supporting vitamin D's caries-fighting benefits, called the issue "unresolved."

Current reviews by the Institute of Medicine, the U.S. Department of Human Health and Service and the American Dental Association draw no conclusions on the vitamin D evidence as it relates to dental caries.

"Such inconsistent conclusions by different organizations do not make much sense from an evidence-based perspective," Hujoel said. The trials he reviewed increased vitamin D levels in children through the use of supplemental UV radiation or by supplementing the children's diet with cod-liver oil or other products containing the vitamin.

The clinical trials he reviewed were conducted in the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Austria, New Zealand and Sweden. Trials were conducted in institutional settings, schools, medical and dental practices, or hospitals. The subjects were children or young adults between the ages of 2 and 16 years, with a weighted mean age of 10 years.

Hujoel's findings come as no surprise to researchers familiar with past vitamin D studies. According to Dr. Michael Hollick, professor of medicine at the Boston University Medical Center, "the findings from the University of Washington reaffirm the importance of vitamin D for dental health." He said that "children who are vitamin D deficient have poor and delayed teeth eruption and are prone to dental caries."

The vitamin D question takes on greater importance in the light of current public health trends. Vitamin D levels in many populations are decreasing while dental caries levels in young children are increasing.

"Whether this is more than just a coincidence is open to debate," Hujoel said. "In the meantime, pregnant women or young mothers can do little harm by realizing that vitamin D is essential to their offspring's health. Vitamin D does lead to teeth and bones that are better mineralized."

Hujoel added a note of caution to his findings: "One has to be careful with the interpretation of this systematic review. The trials had weaknesses which could have biased the result, and most of the trial participants lived in an era that differs profoundly from today's environment. "

Hujoel has joint appointments as a professor in the University of Washington School of Dentistry's Department of Oral Health Sciences and as an adjunct professor of epidemiology in the UW School of Public Health. His research has concentrated on nutrition with a focus on low-carbohydrate diets, harmful effects of diagnostic radiation, and evidence-based methodology and applications.

His research has also covered sugar substitutes, the use of antibiotics in the treatment of periodontal disease, and cleft lip and cleft palate. He has also studied the link between dental disease and systemic disease, as well as trends in disease prevalence.

So...You Want to be a Real Estate Agent-It Ain't Easy Money

Each of these scenarios got me to thinking that I need to write a post about becoming an agent.??There are many books out there to help one become a Real Estate Agent, but I think that there is an overall ignorance of what it means to?BE?a Real Estate Agent and just what it takes. ?I remember reading something saying that just because you like looking at a lot of homes does not a Realtor? make and I remember thinking to myself, "why would anyone pursue a career just on that basis?" ?I thought it odd and was completely surprised to find out that...well...people do think that. ?That IS a reason people pursue a Real Estate license because they like "looking at homes". ?

OK...whatever. ?I don't think that's a prerequisite of becoming an agent, but I am sure it helps if you like looking at homes..because once you become a Real Estate Agent, you are going to need to look at A LOT of homes so that you know what you are doing, but I digress.

Let me first say that getting your Texas Real Estate License is probably pretty easy stuff.??If you have some previous college, it's probably even easier. ?Just take a few classes and then take the darn test and then walla...you have your Texas Real Estate License. ?

But being a Texas Realtor? (and earning a living) isn't that simple.??I remember the day I got my license and hung it with a Broker...I was looking at my phone and thinking...OK World...I am official now...start ringing...and of course nada...nothing. ?It just doesn't work that way. ?

I am not that naive to think that people want to become Realtors? to help the world find home. ?People think becoming an agent is an easy way to make easy money and I am here to tell you that YEP, you can make some money...but EASY it AIN'T...It does take WORK and A LOT of your own Money believe it or not and this can be a shocker to those who get into this biz thinking all's gravy once you get the license. ?

My advice, don't become a Realtor? just because you like looking at homes, or that you think it's easy money.??You need to understand that you are going to be educating and representing someone on the purchase and or sale of said homes you like looking at. ?YOU are going to be the expert in helping them achieve their goals. ?You are going to have to be a problem solver and a quick thinker and you are going to have to be able to get along with other people. ?Your going to need to know how to read contracts and understand what they say and then EXPLAIN them to your buyers and sellers. ?

You are going to need to learn how to judge whether someone is going to buy or not and if they are qualified.??You are going to need to be able to be direct with individuals and let them know that no way on God's green earth are they getting that much for their home and or no way on God's green earth are they going to be able to get all that home on their beer budget and champagne tastes..(and learn to say it tastefully). ?You are going to need to learn how to answer a phone and learn how to get that phone to ring in the first place and you are going to have to learn how to successfully get a transaction to the closing table.

It's a lot to learn and DO and that's really just the tip of the ice berg.??I promise, there is much more to being a Realtor? then what I have just mentioned...AND you are going to need to LOVE doing it because ALL that FREE time you think you have because you just think you show 3 homes like on that popular TV show and your done, or you just stick that sign in the yard and money in the bank (MYTHS by the way)...is NON existent...you will most likely show more than 3 homes and you need to do something other than stick a sign in the yard to get that home exposure...AND

If you HAVE free time, then you need to be using that to get more buyers and sellers?by blogging or advertising or social networking or something to get more clients in the door so that you can start all over again...No Clients...No Money....No Payee Bills...that you have because of Real Estate...(yep there's them dues you have to pay) and your normal living bills, unless you don't like to eat.

Remember what I said above, you will need to LOVE being a Texas Realtor? to gain any traction in this business...to Really be a Real Estate Agent and a good one at that, (you do want to be good at what you do, don't you?). ?I LOVE it...I really do...but I am convinced that this is my calling. ?I will tout the wonderfulness of being a Realtor? to anyone who will listen..but please, don't misunderstand...

    It Ain't Easy Money....

Seeing the world through the eyes of an orangutan

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? A captive bred Sumatran orangutan and a University of Nottingham neuroscientist in Malaysia are hoping to explain some of the mysteries of the visual brain and improve the lives of captive bred animals.

She is a captive bred Sumatran orangutan. He is a neuroscientist specialising in cognitive and sensory systems research. With the help of specially adapted eye tracking equipment they are hoping to explain some of the mysteries of the visual brain and improve the lives of captive bred animals.

Dr Neil Mennie, from The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC), has received funding from Ministry of Science and Technology and Innovation, Malaysia (MOSTI) to study the eye movements of Tsunami -- a seven year old orangutan at The National Zoo of Malaysia (Zoo Negara). Not only will Dr Mennie's research address vital questions about the visual cognition of humans and apes in natural tasks, it will also provide valuable enrichment for the juvenile captive-born orangutan.

Dr Mennie said: "Orangutans are particularly interesting because to survive in the treetops they must be very spatially aware of their surroundings. I hope to investigate their ability to search for food and to compare their progress with humans in 3D search and foraging tasks."

Dr Mennie, who is from the Cognitive and Sensory Systems Research Group in the School of Psychology at UNMC, is interested in how humans and apes use their brains to learn and make predictions about our surroundings. With the help of Tsunami's keeper, Mohd Sharullizam Ramli, and the special eye tracking equipment that is worn over her head and shoulders, Dr Mennie has spent the last year recording Tsunami's eye and body movements during the performance of complex actions such as locomotion, foraging for food and manipulation of small objects.

Tracking the eyes of an Orangutan

Tsunami was slowly introduced to the idea of wearing the eye tracking equipment that consists of a back pack containing a wireless transmitter. This pack back transmits data from two video cameras mounted on her head-band. As Tsunami performs various natural tasks -- foraging for food, using tools, moving around -- one camera films what she sees and the other camera films the movements of her right eye. Afterwards Dr Mennie and his students sit down and look at each video frame from this camera and write down the timing and location of these eye movements over the environment. As we make 3 eye movements per second, this is a very time consuming procedure.

Dr Mennie said: "I'm interested in the way we make predictive eye movements to places in the world where the stimulus is yet to appear and whether these predictive eye movements are there to assist the timing and placement of actions or whether they also help high-level mechanisms such as memory for our immediate space and the location of objects within it."

As part of his research Dr Mennie is also hoping to shed light on how these endangered animals navigate to help other scientists who seek to conserve the orangutan habitat. Knowledge of their foraging and search behaviour may help in the design and conservation of forest corridors.

Improving the life of captive animals

Orangutans are a critically endangered species -- they are also among the most intelligent primates. The Sumatran orangutan is on the IUCN Critically Endangered list. At Zoo Negara they are hoping Dr Mennie's research will help them develop their Enrichment Programme that is designed to get captive animals behaving as they would in the wild.

In the wild Tsunami would use her vision and her hands to guide her through the environment -- to find food, to use tools, to move and climb. To make Dr Mennie's task even harder, orangutans can grasp equally well with their feet. Faradilla Ain Roselan, Zoology Officer at Zoo Negara Enrichment Centre, said: "We want to keep our animals occupied so they don't display stereo typical behaviour such as pacing. We also want them to be able to exhibit any natural behaviour. Apes are highly intelligent animals and we don't want them to get bored. If we predict what they want to do maybe we can think of an enrichment that would suit their intelligence."

    Long term goals

Currently Tsunami is in a specially built enclosure and this is proving to be a very useful beginning. Eventually he hopes to track this young orangutan when she is allowed to join her fellow red apes and Dr Mennie's long term goal is to record animals in the wild.

Dr Mennie said: "I could have done this research at any zoo. But the orangutan is a flagship symbol of Malaysia and I think it is fitting that this research is done here in Malaysia at The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus."

With funding from the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) Dr Mennie has already studied Orangutan eye movements in free ranging behaviour. MOHE has also funded a project that looked at the predictive eye movements of humans when they play the Malaysian game Congkak.
